The 2016 census showed that the Indigenous population in PEI comprises just over 2% of the total population, making it imperative to ensure that their cultural narratives and artistic contributions are not only preserved but also elevated within the broader artistic community. Limited access to resources and support networks presents significant challenges for Indigenous musicians on the island.
Musicians from communities such as the Abegweit First Nation and the Lennox Island First Nation often encounter difficulties obtaining funding for performances, studio sessions, and development opportunities. A lack of mentorship and training resources hampers their ability to improve their skills and expand their reach within the music industry. This funding grant aims to tackle these issues directly, focusing on the specific needs of Indigenous musicians by facilitating access to performance and recording opportunities.
